Okay, so we all know that video games based on movies usually suck.
Examples:
Raiders of the Lost Ark - Atari 2600 (1982)
Star Wars - Nintendo (1987)
Back to the Future - Nintendo
Friday the 13th - Nintendo
Total Recall
Street Fighter: The Movie: The Game - Playstation/ Sega Saturn
Enter the Matrix -
E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial - Atari 2600
But there are some exceptions (the list is below). The X-Men Origins: Wolverine, is definitely one of them. For starters the game doesn’t follow the movie exactly a lot of things changed and some stayed the same. The game is heavy on the backstory, the mission to Africa for Adamantium, multiple secret military installations, friends and foes never mentioned in the movie and special origin story about a over pigmented future X-Men.
Besides all that fun story-line stuff, there is also some pretty solid game mechanics. Hit detection is pretty spot on, when Wolverine lunges at a person it actually connects, no jumps past or through the person and then the action happens it’s all pretty spot on. I do have to note that glitches did happen but only twice. Once while fighting Sabertooth, I had already moved behind him and and the predetermined action that was supposed to happened continued even though I wasn’t in the correct spot (it was funny to see myself get thrown through a window when we were standing back to back. The other time was while fighting Gambit, I’ll try to keep this cryptic for those who either aren’t there yet or haven’t played the game yet. While fighting him in New Orleans stuff that you are on that is about to blow up, blows up because you couldn’t jump off. Another point in the fight, both of you are supposed to fall onto a platform, he jumps up to where the fight continues and you have to climb a ladder but on your way up a piece of scaffolding is blocking your ascent. Needless to say it took a couple of reloads to finish the fight, other then that the game ran pretty smoothly. I am however a little upset that you were only able to do the human shield move once wait no that is a predetermined action.
The Bonus section is pretty limited, it’s just where you go to unlock alternate costumes to wear in game, there’s nothing like running around in classic yellow and blue tights. To unlock the bonus area you must collect Wolverine statues, there are four sets of statues scattered throughout the entire game. Just because you found one classic Wolverine statues in the first level doesn’t mean you’ll find the next classic to complete the set in the same level or even the next. You might find X-factor Wolverine or Legendary Wolverine next.
Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber and Will i Am lend their voices to the game as did Phil LaMarr (from MadTV) for Gambit (I didn’t notice a difference maybe thats because Taylor Kitsch is a crap actor).
In summation, X-Men Origins: Wolverine is a must see movie and a must play game. All achievements are fairly easy to get although some my be tricky to find, but all in all it’s a pretty awesome game and as the ending implies I hope to be playing the sequel soon.
